Smaller Groups

@Kodo has experimented with the concept of specially-formed smaller groups that allow a greater emphasis on improvisation and better mobility than the full tour group. San'nin Gurui (Crazy threesome), a trio led by Leonard Eto, made a tour of West Africa in Autumn 1991, visiting and playing with friends made at previous Earth Celebrations. That group subsequently gave a series of African-influenced performances at Restaurant CAY, a smaller venue in Tokyo. "Hanayui", a song and dance performance by women members of the Kodo community was presented to a larger audience for the first time at Earth Celebration '93 and performed in Tokyo in 1994. And in Sepetmber, 1996, a special unit of taiko players (incl. Yoshikazu & Yoko Fujimoto, Ryutaro Kaneko, and Yasukazu Kano from Kodo) conducted by photographer George Hashiguchi, is visiting and playing for the old Japanese immigrants in Cuba and Domincan Republic.
